LUCIA plan to build and equip a library for Saria school in Sheno, which currently only has 4 classrooms for 465 pupils. At present the Saria region has no access to information, and this is something we would like to address as we believe education is the answer to lifting people out of poverty.
A library will provide additional teaching and resources not at present available to the children. It will maximise opportunities for all people in the area, providing access not only to children at the school but also to the rest of the community who wish to broaden their knowledge. Books on a wide range of relevant subjects will be provided and the focus will not only be on academic achievement but also education on social issues.
LUCIA will work in partnership with Developing Families Together (DFT), an Ethiopian NGO, on this project. DFT built the existing Saria school classrooms and provided chairs and tables. The school is actually featured in our documentary, and we're keen to support it in every way we can.
It will cost approximately £19,000 to build the library, so we'll have to do a lot of fundraising! Over the coming months we'll be suggesting many ways in which you can help support this project, and keep you updated on our progress. In the meantime, For further information please look at our project pack or instead get in touch, we'd love to hear from you!

Members of the LUCIA team recently visited Ethiopia in order to monitor the charity's projects. Here new LUCIA officer (and GP) Janet Clarke gives her impressions of Saria School...
"As a relatively new recruit to the LUCIA cause, I was delighted to have the opportunity to visit Ethiopia with Sylvia and Ron Gardiner and Chris Gates in February.
Although I had gained a fair impression of LUCIA projects through the website and speaking to Sylvia it wasn’t until the visit that I really understood the situation on the ground and the value of LUCIA’s contribution.
One of the first places we visited was the Saria School, a primary school about 160 km North West of Addis Ababa. As the school is situated about 5 km off the main road, Demiss’s “new” minibus had to cope with rocky terrain and we feared for his tyres and chassis. However we arrived safely to a reception from the children, staff and elders of the village which was very moving.

There'll even be a fundaising 'book thermometer' on our homepage so you can see how close we are to reaching our monetary target. In the meantime, if you'd like any further information on the project or are keen to help us fundraise please get in touch, we'd love to hear from you! |
