Ironman Triathlon success! Print E-mail

ironman-challenge
Back in November, supporter David Stokes completed the half-ironman challenge in the blazing Australian heat to raise money for LUCIA. We can't thank him enough for his efforts and for inspiring us all to go that extra mile! Here he tells of his experience...

"On the 15th November 2009 I completed my first half-ironman in aid of LUCIA. A half-ironman is a type of triathlon, i.e. it involves a swim, a bike ride and a run in succession. The main reason for using the term 'ironman' is the distances involved, namely a 1.9km swim, a 90km bike ride followed by a 21km run (a half marathon).

I said I completed it, however what I haven't mentioned was that it took place in Shepparton, a small town in the middle of Victoria in Australia. Located at least 200km from the sea, there were blue skies, a bright sun and temperatures of 36C.

The day of the race started off with a reality check. My partner in crime Iain Sanders and I were checking into the event and getting ready for the 1.9km open water swim (in a muddy lake with a water temp of 26C) when it dawned upon us that our fellow competitors were a collection of Australia's elite athletes showcasing their well formed muscles and tanned bodies. Admittedly these were probably sprayed on...at least that's what I consoled myself with whilst people put on their sunnies to look at my blinding white body! There were six packs in abundance and very few sporting the party packs Iain and myself had paid good money for down at the local pub whilst carbo loading.

Birminghamhalfmarathon
After hearing that several of the participants in the Birmingham half-marathon were running for LUCIA, local resident Tracey Kent set about showing them support during the route. With help from the family, the LUCIA banner was tied up in her garden and a beautiful sign was made to spur on runners Ann Evans and Liz Broomfield. Those running past couldn't help but notice the LUCIA logo, and it certainly helped remind Ann and Liz why they were taking part. Both runners did fantastically well and are still taking sponsorship money. If you were unable to cheer for them on the day but would like to congratulate them both, why not make a donation? Simply click on their names above to be taken to their JustGiving fundraising pages. Add a comment

bookcrossingbooks

As reported in a previous article, I decided to use my hobby of BookCrossing to help raise awareness and (hopefully) funds for LUCIA. I’ve been supporting LUCIA for a few years when I go running, but the number of books I had in the house and the timing of Ethiopian New Year in September suggested this idea to me.

I put the idea to my fellow BookCrossers on the site forum in plenty of time – this meant that quite a few of the books were read through the summer, ready for release. I decided on a theme of “Women’s Roles” in the titles of the books (plus the word “Lucia”) as this would hopefully garner some positive and interesting book titles. I wasn’t wrong there!

One lovely BookCrosser in the US, Innae, promised to sponsor 10 cents for every book released during the month and challenged us to reach 1,000 books, so I was quite nervous as September came around, hoping I could get enough people on board and not get some tiny target and raise just a few cents.

Going the extra mile for LUCIA! Print E-mail

jerseymarathon

On Saturday 27th September 2009, Alison Dingle and Ian Anscombe, not satisfied with the half marathon they'd already run for LUCIA, decided to go for the Jersey full marathon. The weather was lovely and hot which suited the supporters, Dave, Val and Ron who travelled over to Jersey for the weekend just to lend their support. However, the pleasure of such warm weather did not suit the runners; cool light rain would have been much appreciated. At 16 miles with the LUCIA poster displayed on the back of the car, the supporters waited for the wonderful LUCIA runners – it has to be said the supporters moved the car several times on route before they could decide if they’d missed them or not!
