Having seen fellow-BookCrossers engage in all sorts of activities to help their chosen charities, I thought I could use my favourite hobby to raise awareness of, and some money for, LUCIA.
BookCrossing is the act of releasing books into “the wild” to travel and find new readers. Every BookCrossing book is registered with a unique ID number, which can be tracked on the website – if a book is found and an entry made about it on the website, every person who has owned that copy of the book previously is alerted via email.
I’ve been BookCrossing for almost exactly five years and I’ve given away thousands of books. I started off getting rid of my own unwanted books; I also find second copies of books I’ve loved in charity shops and am lucky enough to be given books by a local charity shop and by members of the freecycle organisation and public librarians.
In September 2009, a group of BookCrossers will be celebrating and promoting LUCIA with a mass release. We’ve got specially-designed stickers that go inside and on the front of the books, and hopefully lots of people will be made aware of LUCIA through these, and the notes we’ve placed on the books’ pages on the website.

The last few months proved to be very busy indeed for the resident LUCIA gardeners, Olga and Sylvia. Hours were spent tenderly caring for (and talking to!) hundreds of geraniums that were sold to supporters. Grown from plugs, the geraniums flowered into beautiful plants that now feature in many gardens around the West Midlands! All of the hard work and dedication clearly paid off, raising over £500 for LUCIA’s projects in Ethiopia.

We will soon be supplementing our regular financial support to SWDA by providing Siiqqee with an extra pair of hands in the office. As SWDA grows in its scope and reach, it needs more than ever to be able to write strong bids for more funding and to document its work in a business-like way. It also needs to account for its activities and impact to the Ethiopian government and the charities (like LUCIA) that fund it.
To support these requirements we have arranged a student placement with SWDA, providing an English-speaking student with a strong academic background to work alongside the local staff. We look forward to introducing you soon to Kirsty Bate, a student at Coventry University, who will be flying out to Addis Ababa in September.

LUCIA braved the rain to hold a stall at the aptly named Water for Life Festival, as part of BBC Springwatch’s Dirty Weekend campaign.
The festival, held in Cannon Hill Park on Sunday 7th June, aimed to raise awareness of areas of natural beauty as well as practical ways to reduce water consumption and participate in Springwatch’s ‘do one thing for nature'.
Taking refuge in the Fair-trade tent, the LUCIA stand promoted the ongoing projects the charity supports, signed up some new supporters and sold a range of scarves which were a welcomed extra layer in the morning’s downpour. The volunteers also helped out other exhibitors by indulging in some lovely fair-trade chocolate and jewellery!
