LUCIA Charity
Blackboard appeal

One of LUCIA's supporters Janet Kain recently accompanied the trustees on their visit to Ethiopia. Here she writes about her appeal to buy new equipment for a school she visited:

"I recently return from Ethiopia with my friends from LUCIA. I could tell you about the many success stories but as a retired teacher I was particularly interested in the Tefki Elementary School just 70 kilometres outside Addis Abba. The school director Terefe Derra told us the school held 2,000 pupils. The students were taught in very poor conditions with little equipment, in particular just one blackboard for all the pupils. This blackboard was in a very bad state. As such I have made it my mission to try and raise funds to buy some new blackboards.

At a recent LUCIA fundraising function at the Kings Heath Cricket Club I made an appeal to the people present to give any loose change towards this cause. I had a bucket at the exit at the end of the night and everyone gave generously. I raised £160.41, almost enough for two blackboards. My mother very kindly made up the full amount needed to purchase them. If anyone would like to give a donation towards a third, it would be very much appreciated and will go to improving the education of these students tremendously".

If you would like to support Janet in her quest, please send your donations to the LUCIA postal address, clearly marking them for the 'blackboard appeal'.
