January is the time of year when Scots don their kilts and raise a glass and a haggis to the memory of Robert Burns. Our Burns Supper was seen in with the skirl of the bagpipes and out with Auld Lang Syne, and along the way we enjoyed poems, speeches, singing, music and dancing. Many thanks to The Kings Heath Sports and Cricket Club for an excellent dinner and venue, to the Cuckoo’s Nest band for a terrific ceilidh, and to the very many speakers, musicians and volunteers who all played their part in an evening of traditional Scottish celebration. Check out the photos on our flickr page.

The Summer Ball has to be one of the most spectacular fundraising events for LUCIA, brought about by two new members to the charity, Louise John and Vickie Smith. Their innovation and hard work has taken LUCIA to another level, with 133 people attending the glamorous event (view the photos here). Men attired in their tuxedoes and women with every hem length and dress colour imaginable certainly ‘dressed to impress’. After alighting their cars at the entrance of the Village Hotel in Shirley, guests were photographed as they travelled up the red carpet between the African palms to receive their welcoming drinks. Sophistication was the word all the way; the beautifully decorated tables and flowers meant that the evening took on the feel of a real gala Film premiere night. Excellent food was served, with popular live music provided by the Whistle Test.
Before dinner the guests watched the fifteen minute documentary of LUCIA’s work in Ethiopia, directed and filmed by the honored guests for the evening, Elliot and Zander Weaver from Free Spirit Film and Television. They happily accepted a ‘Froggie Award’, LUCIA’s own Oscar awards which were beautifully presented by Louise John. We had many phone calls the following day regarding the film so we are pleased to inform you all that it can now be seen on the website.
The guests showed tremendous generosity throughout the evening, purchasing raffle tickets and original hand woven Ethiopia scarves. In all, over £1600 was raised for LUCIA's projects in Ethiopia. The LUCIA team would like to thank you, the supporter, for your generosity, kindness and continuing support. Without you there would not be a LUCIA.
Finally, we would like to make a special thank you for this very special night to Louise and Vickie for all their hard work, commitment and showing us (the rest of the team), we can reach the sky if we try. |

A team of dedicated LUCIA supporters willingly took to the catwalk to promote Fairtrade at the Blood, Sweat and Traffic event in central Birmingham. The evening, co-ordinated by the Fairtrade Association Birmingham (FAB) for Fairtrade Fortnight, featured a fantastic fashion show which displayed the wide array of Fairtrade clothing available to buy. Our models wore clothes from ethical fashion suppliers PeopleTree and Revolver, as well as traditional Ethiopian garments sourced by LUCIA.
The event was organised to raise awareness of the work local people do to support Fairtrade. A number of Birmingham-based campaigners were interviewed during the course of the evening, including our very own Sylvia Gardiner. She spoke of the work of the SWDA Self Help Groups, as well as the Ethiopian women with HIV/AIDS who rely on making handicrafts to earn money.
The event was a great success, and demonstrated the commitment West Midlands’ residents have to supporting Fairtrade. LUCIA would like to thank everyone who contributed to the evening. In particular, a big thank you goes out to our gracious models; Heather Plumptre, Qi Qu, Emma Hazlewood and Louise Johns.
Check out some photos from the event here. |

It may have been cold and frosty in Kings Heath, but we enjoyed a warm and happy evening thanks to the singing and playing of Little Sister and their support acts, and mulled wine and drinks from the Café.
Little Sister (Hannah, Abie, Laura and Sam) put on an astonishing show of versatile musical talent, performing an entertaining mix of original numbers and quirky arrangements of traditional songs. They sung songs in several languages, which were all accompanied by guitars, harp, violin, accordion, flute, kazoo, spoons, sound effects… and viola!
We were transported in song to warmer places around the world, from the African continent to the Americas and, er, Ashby de la Zouch. An extra African connection came from support Dan on West African Kora, and young Clemmie made her stage debut on guitar and vocals. The audience joined in with the choruses and learned how to make rain(!) A big thank you to Little Sister for a wonderful evening. |
