Past Events

Here are a few photos and details from some of our past events...

A very big thank you to all those who have joined in and supported us. We have had lots of fun along the way and raised much needed funds for our African projects at the same time. We hope to see you all at LUCIA's future events!

Best wishes, The LUCIA Team.

tombola
The LUCIA trustees are continually overwhelmed by the support and generosity of their colleagues at the University of Birmingham. On the 3rd September the College of Medical and Dental Sciences held their annual Summer Fayre and took the opportunity to fundraise for LUCIA. It was a wonderful afternoon, complete with a barbeque and all kinds of carnival games such as Hook-a-Duck and Play Your Cards Right. As part of the event the staff at the school held a tombola and cake stall for LUCIA, and overall over £800 was raised! The trustees would like to thank everyone at the College of MDS for their contribution. Add a comment

tabletopcakes
The photo above simply doesn't do justice to the wonderful selection of baked goods that were lovingly handmade by our volunteers for our table top sale on 12th September. As well as the odd gingerbread man and carrot cake slice, residents of Kings Heath had the opportunity to buy a variety of new and secondhand goods at the event. It was a great success, with happy customers walking away with brand new jewellery, vintage home furnishings and LUCIA bookcrossing books! Over £350 was raised in total and LUCIA would like to thank everyone who made a contribution to what was a fantastic day. Add a comment

skittles
Last week saw teams battle once again on the skittle alley at Selly Park Tavern. Our regular 'beer and skittles' nights always prove popular, with the latest event selling out almost before it was advertised! Organised by our committed supporter John Rickards, the event was a chance for people to test their co-ordination skills and perhaps win a prize. The night also successfully raised a fantastic £250 which will be used to help run the kindergarten LUCIA supports in Alemgena. Thank you to everyone who came along!

wythall-carnival
With their eye on one of the bottles of wine or luxury bubble bath, visitors flocked to the LUCIA bottle tombola at Wythall Carnival. As children occupied themselves with 'hook a duck', adults crossed their fingers in the hope that their ticket number would secure one of the top prizes. Even if they only managed to walk away with a bottle of vinegar however, they could be assured that their money was going to a great cause. Thanks to the generosity of visitors to the stall and those who donated bottles, £190 was raised for LUCIA's projects in Ethiopia. The Drowsy Maggie band
Irish folk band Drowsy Maggie's second performance for LUCIA was a roaring success. All two hundred attendees enjoyed an evening of traditional Irish folk, with such favourites as Galway Shawl, Fields of Athenry, Sweet Molly Malone (Cockles and Muscles) and a condensed version of Wild Rover. And not to leave anyone out, the band played a few other songs from around the British Isles.

Audience participation was almost mandatory as the crowd, of whom there were more people than seats, provided drum accompaniment and choral musings. And true to form the crowd dug deep raising an extra £350 in raffle money and £168 in a bucket drop at the end of the night to raise money for a desperately needed blackboard. A grand total of over £1500 was raised on the night and a good craic had by all!
