Each day there are many people suffering all over the world; some due to natural issues, others due to manmade problems. Thankfully, in many parts of the world there is suitable infrastructure in place to help those in need. For example, well equipped hospitals, domestic violence support groups and children's welfare departments.

Unfortunately, in most areas of Africa this is not the case.

The problems, to name but a few: violence against women; child abuse; human rights violations; lack of education. These may all sound familiar. "We have those here" you might think to yourself ...and you would be quite right.  BUT, the difference is that in many areas of Africa, the people of poor communities stand completely alone. They have no-one to turn to. Even where the most basic of help exists, the people often simply do not know about it, or are unaware of their rights.

As one organisation, LUCIA can't possibly solve all of the issues in Africa. However, over time, through self-sustainable development projects, we aim to help the African people make their own lasting changes in some key areas. We will also help to relieve the suffering of as many people as possible:

  • To stop one women or child being raped
  • To stop one child growing up crippled due to carrying heavy loads when they are young
  • To stop one person spreading, or becoming infected with HIV or AIDS
  • To stop one person from starving or living rough "on the street"
  • To stop one young girl dying from complications caused by female genital mutilation
  • To give one person the opportunity of a good education
  • To give one person the feeling of self-respect and sense of achievement
  • To empower one downtrodden person and see them motivated.

These are the reasons why the LUCIA trustees, volunteers, partners, sponsors and supporters all do what we do. Simply, to improve the lives of as many impoverished people and communities in Africa as we can, especially women and children in Ethiopia, which remains one of the poorest countries in the world.
