LUCIA, or ‘Life Uplifted by Change In Africa', is a small Birmingham (UK) based charity run entirely by enthusiastic volunteers, five of whom act as the charity's board of trustees. The aim of the charity is to improve the lives of people living in poor areas of Africa, particularly women and children in Ethiopia.
To do this LUCIA supports various projects including:
- The formation of Women's Self Help Groups (SHG), promoting sustainable development within communities.
- The provision of healthcare, food and education for orphan girls and street children.
LUCIA is registered with the UK Charity Commission, as charity number 1112674 |

LUCIA was formed by a group of work colleagues at the University of Birmingham after one member, Sylvia Gardiner, visited her son in Ethiopia during the Christmas of 2004/2005. Whilst in Ethiopia she was struck by the poverty of the country and wanted to do something to help. Upon her return to England she gathered a group of interested work colleagues together, and a few months later LUCIA held its first official charity event. Since then LUCIA has become a registered charity via the UK Charity Commission (no. 1112674).

The African people are strong, intelligent and resourceful, but many areas have fallen into poverty after being affected by years of natural phenomena such as famine, floods and disease, or by man-made issues, such as corruption and war. Sadly it is the ‘common people' that suffer most, especially the women and children. In many areas, women also have the added cultural issue of being seen as second class citizens and are treated badly.
LUCIA believes that the key to positive change is to help the African people, particularly women, to help themselves with long-term self-sustainable development projects. In turn, this reduces reliance on international aid. Instead of simply giving repeated hand-outs of food or money, LUCIA works towards empowering African communities and individuals so that they can become self sufficient and then go on to help others to do the same. LUCIA does occasionally use a small amount of its money to fund emergency relief work as we recognise that some communities will need this in order to reach the sustainable development phase.

Each day there are many people suffering all over the world; some due to natural issues, others due to manmade problems. Thankfully, in many parts of the world there is suitable infrastructure in place to help those in need. For example, well equipped hospitals, domestic violence support groups and children's welfare departments.
Unfortunately, in most areas of Africa this is not the case.
